Okay, a customer is using BACKSCATTERER and they are blocking our e-
mails.
I checked our IP and it is currently listed but the last event was on
6/12/09 but won't be delisted until 3/01/2010.
I thought the delisting was for only 4 weeks.

Frankly I hadn't heard of this "service" until this happened -- the
overall process seems a bit high handed.
If you have one event you are delisted for 4 weeks -- really? Talk
about a zero tolerance policy. To me that
seems both a little extreme and silly.

I am all for reducing SPAM and useless responses, but this just
seems....well wrong.
What if the RBL's or other lists used the same philosophy? Hardly
anyone would be able to send e-mail!

Stop right there. Your customer has decided to use a list designed to
stop backscatter but uses it to stop emails instead. Bad idea on his
part. Point out to your customer that he is using the list in a way it is
not intended to be used. Also point out, that if he wants your emails, he
should be able to whitelist you, if he continues to use the backscatterer
list this way.

You might inform your customer that, if he wants to block backscatter,
he can use backscatterer.org only for the null sender.

Servers sending backscatter are AFAIK not known to be spam emitting
servers.

Some -like me- think those four weeks are too short, but that's only an
opinion.

If they aren't willing to whitelist you, dispite whatever
other spam control they may be using, they likely don't
really want your mail.

UCEprotect doesn't expect mail server admins to use
the backscatter DNSbl for blocking all messages,
rather just messages from null sender <> or postmaster@;
<http://www.backscatterer.org/?target=usage>

However nothing prevents mail server admins from doing
whatever feel like doing.

Some people use whitelists as blacklists, or vise versa.

Recipients get to decide what they will accept or not.

It is up to the recipient to make certain they accept
messages they need / want / expect.

IIRC SORBS is something like 1yr/spam.

The dates you give *do* correspond to 4 weeks. The list is operated
from Europe, where month and day are typically written "backward"
compared to the U.S. So I believe this is saying they last detected
backscatter from you on Dec. 6, and your 4-week delisting (if you have
fixed your backscattering in the meantime) will be January 3.
